Speech and Language FAQs

Many parents have questions about how well their child is learning to speak. Here are the answers to some common questions that parents ask:

Can a parent tell whether a child's speech is developing well?

Yes. You know your child best. You talk and listen to your child more than anyone else. If you think that your child has any of speech or language difficulties, contact a Speech-Language Pathologist.

Will my child grow out of any speech or language difficulties?

Some children do grow out of speech or language concerns. It is best not to wait and see. The sooner a difficulty is discovered, the sooner we can begin to do something to help.

Should I wait until my child starts school?

No. If you think your child may have any speech difficulties, call right away. It is better to treat speech or language difficulties early. Your child will have more time to develop the skills needed at school.

How can I make a referral for my child?

Will our child have any speech or language concerns if we speak more one than language at home?

No. Children in a bilingual home may start talking a little later, but follow the same general development.

Should I worry if my child stutters?

Children often repeat words or phrases when they learn to talk. This is normal for most children between 2 and 5 years old. Your child may do this for a few days or more. Any child who is repeating words or phrases frequently should be seen by a Speech-Language Pathologist.

What happens when I contact Talk 2 Me?

You will be asked for your contact information and some general questions about your child’s speech and language. Within 4 to 6 weeks, you will be contacted by our program assistant to gather more information and to schedule an appointment with a Speech-Language Pathologist.

What happens at the time of the assessment?

You and your child will meet with the Speech Language Pathologist. You will be asked some questions pertaining to your child’s communication development. Your child will be observed while playing with toys, be asked some questions, name some pictures/objects, and interact in a very natural, fun way with the Speech Pathologist. Some standardized testing may take place. You will get the results at the time of the assessment and recommended services will be discussed with you.

When should I be concerned about how well my child is talking?
