Talk 2 Me Preschool Speech & Language

To be eligible for Talk 2 Me, your child must be between birth to school entry, and you must live in Windsor/Essex County.

If you have concerns about your child’s speech and language development, you can visit our milestones page to see some of the skills that mark the progress of young children as they learn to communicate and what to watch out for. If your child is not meeting the milestones for their age, reach out to us and we can assess what kinds of support you and your child may need.

To refer your child to Talk 2 Me, call us at 519-252-0636, or access our online referral. You do not need a referral from your doctor.

After your referral is received, the first step is a 15-minute phone screening. This screening will take place within approximately 6 weeks of the referral. In this phone screening we will ask you questions about your child’s development, how they play, socialize, and communicate.

We will also schedule your initial assessment meeting with a Speech-Language Pathologist. There may be a waitlist for our services, so the earlier you refer the better.

The goal of the initial assessment is to get to know your child and your family, understand your concerns, assess your child’s communication skills, and make a plan with you.

Appointments are 1 to 1.5 hours long. The SLP will ask you questions, watch how your child communicates with you, and may play with your child to elicit certain skills. They may test your child using pictures or toys. Based on the concerns and areas of development identified in the assessment, your SLP will recommend appropriate interventions/strategies for you and your child to follow up with at home together. How to work on those goals will be demonstrated to you in the assessment.

Your SLP may also recommend further services such as parent education, group, or individual therapy.

As a parent or caregiver, you play an important role in supporting your child’s speech and language development. Your goals and programming will be updated every 3-6 months based on progress.
